Health And Wellbeing

What is a Survivor?

a person who survives, especially a person remaining alive after an event in which others have died.

survivors demonstrably have resilience, which is the ability to adapt and bounce back from life's challenges. This resilience is fueled by an innate strength to endure, adapt, and persevere, often developed through overcoming past struggles and maintaining hope for the future.
Characteristics and behaviours of survivor resilience:
Adaptability: Survivors often show a remarkable ability to adjust quickly to new or challenging situations.
Perseverance: A key aspect of resilience is the capacity to keep moving forward despite hardships. This is often framed as "getting hit and kept moving".
Hope: Maintaining a desire to survive, even in the face of overwhelming odds, is a crucial component.
Psychological Processing: Many survivors are able to calm their reactions, process their traumatic experiences, and come to terms with what has happened, preventing it from remaining overwhelming.
Planning: Survivors who have demonstrated exceptional resilience often focus on planning for the future while dealing with the present, sometimes even minute by minute.
Learning and growth: Survivors can gain strength from unpleasant experiences by learning from them and growing, rather than viewing themselves as permanent victims.

The role of support in resilience
Social Networks: Strong social connections, such as family, friends, and support groups, are vital for healing and recovery.
Community Support: Resilience is not solely an individual trait; it is also fostered by a supportive community that provides trust, safety, and connection.
Spiritual and Family Support: Research shows that spiritual and family support can significantly facilitate a survivor's recovery process.

Survivors Mental Health & Wellbeing:

Survivor's mental health and wellbeing are affected by trauma, which can lead to conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and long-term physical issues. A person's reaction to trauma can vary based on individual factors, but with time, healthy coping strategies, and appropriate support, survivors can build resilience and heal.

Common mental health impacts of trauma:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Characterized by intrusive memories, flashbacks, avoidance of trauma reminders, and hypervigilance.

  • Complex PTSD (C-PTSD): Results from repeated, long-term trauma, particularly during childhood. Symptoms include those of PTSD along with difficulties in emotional regulation, relationships, and self-perception.

  • Depression and Anxiety: Trauma significantly increases the risk for these conditions, which can manifest as persistent sadness, panic attacks, or phobias.

  • Dissociation: Feeling disconnected from one's thoughts, feelings, or identity. This can be a survival mechanism to cope with intense or chronic trauma.

  • Substance abuse: Some survivors turn to drugs or alcohol to self-medicate and numb the pain of trauma. While this may offer temporary relief, it can lead to dependency and worsen mental health in the long run.

  • Physical health problems: The chronic stress from trauma can affect physical health, contributing to chronic pain, headaches, fatigue, and heart problems.

  • Strained relationships: Trauma can make it difficult to trust others, leading to feelings of isolation and withdrawal or causing unhealthy dependency.

Foundational steps for healing:

  • Recognize the impact: Acknowledging how the traumatic event has affected you is the first step toward recovery.

  • Prioritize safety: Survivors need to feel both physically and psychologically safe. This means establishing a safe environment and learning to identify and manage triggers.

  • Process grief: Survivors often experience waves of grief over the trauma itself, the person they were before it happened, and other losses. Give yourself time and permission to grieve without putting pressure on yourself to feel better immediately.

  • Build a support network: Connect with trusted friends, family, or support groups to combat feelings of isolation. Sharing your experiences with people who understand can be very helpful.

Coping and resilience-building strategies:

  • Professional therapy: A trauma-informed therapist can provide effective, specialized treatment. Modalities like Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Somatic Therapy are particularly helpful for processing trauma.

  • Mindfulness and meditation: These practices can help with emotional regulation by focusing on the present moment and calming the nervous system.

  • Healthy habits: Ensure you get enough sleep, eat nutritious food, and exercise regularly. Physical movement helps reduce stress and improve mood.

  • Creative expression: Engage in hobbies like writing, art, or music. Creative outlets provide a safe way to express feelings and process difficult emotions.

  • Grounding techniques: When you feel overwhelmed or triggered, focus on your five senses to reconnect with the present moment. This can help prevent dissociation and manage anxiety.

  • Find purpose: Engaging in meaningful activities or volunteering for a cause can help provide a renewed sense of purpose and direction.

  • Set small goals: Focusing on achievable, daily goals can help you regain a sense of control and accomplishment.

  • Manage media consumption: Limiting your exposure to media coverage of the traumatic event can help prevent distress and retraumatization.
